There’s nothing more frustrating than a garage door that won’t open.

For most people, the whole point of having a garage in the first place is to have a safe spot to store and protect their vehicle. However, your garage is only convenient for storing your vehicle if you can open and close the door easily. Whether you are trying to get to work in the morning or coming home at the end of a long day, your garage door needs to open, and if it’s won’t, you need to find out why and get it repaired. Here are a few of the possible reasons why your garage door won’t open:

#1. Something is blocking the photo eye.

If your garage door was manufactured within the last 20 years, then it probably has a photo eye that detects people or objects blocking the path of the garage door. When something or someone is detected, the garage door will reverse to avoid crushing the person or object. If your garage door isn’t working, check to see that the photo eye isn’t clogged with dust or dirt. You should also make sure that both photo eyes are in alignment with one another and facing each other.

#2. The torsion spring is broken.

Did you hear a loud bang before your garage door stopped opening and closing? If you heard a noise that sounded like a gunshot or a firecracker, then your torsion spring is probably broken. Never attempt to open or close your garage door if you think that your torsion spring may be broken. Torsion springs are one of the most common garage door repairs needed, but they can be incredibly dangerous to repair or maintain on your own.

#3. The power source isn’t working.

In order for your garage door opener to work, it needs to be plugged into a working outlet. One of the first things you should do when your garage door isn’t working is to check that it is plugged in. You should also make sure that the outlet is working, which may require you to reset your circuit breaker.

#4. The transmitter is dead.

Whether you are using a remote garage door opener in your car or you are using a keypad on the side of your garage, it needs batteries in order to transmit the signal to your garage door opener. To be safe, make it a point to change out these batteries at the same time every year.
