Your garage is the most vulnerable room in your home.

Your garage isn’t just where you temporarily store your vehicle; if your home is like most, it’s another entrance into your home. Chances are, your garage is also where you keep a good portion of your storage. Not many people think about how secure their garages are, but it is an important thing to consider. The last thing that you want is for someone to break into your home through your garage, but you’ll be glad to know that there are many steps you can take to increase your garage’s security, including:

#1. Keep it locked.

If your garage door is connected to your home, you need to keep the service door locked at all times. Keep in mind that this door should be just as secure as all of the other exterior doors in your home, which means that it needs a deadbolt.

#2. Install a security light.

Light has a way of scaring burglars away, so it’s important that the most vulnerable entrance into your home isn’t dark or shady. Install a security light to spotlight the area. Motion sensors are great options for garage security lights because they turn on when there is movement, and you won’t have to pay to keep the light on all the time.

#3. Obscure the windows.

Many burglars will look in the window to determine if your home is worth breaking into before they do anything else. Don’t give them the benefit of seeing into your garage. Frost the windows or cover them up, and keep your most valuable possessions out of sight.
